You must be wrapping your yarn the wrong way over the needle when you purl. It should go from front to back. Far better to correct this at the source than by knitting in the back of the stitch on the next row. I have no trouble purling Continental style. In fact, I have never even tried any other way of knitting, having learned as a young girl the "old country" way from my mother. I remember having problems with purling at first, and I don't remember how I figured it out. But now I drop my middle finger (left hand) to hold the yarn against the needle, and it pulls through very easily.
