I don't know what you are knitting. But that just means that the pattern is going to be worked over 4 sts. So then you have to figure out how many you want going across. Say this is a scarf you are knitting. You could fit say 6 of these pattern repeat across. Meaning 6 x 4(pattern repeat) + 2. You would cast on 26 sts.
