What does slip marker mean?

I am working on circular needles making a hat. I am starting to do the decreases and the instructions say to

K2tog before marker, slip marker, K1, SSK

I have a marker placed after each 4th of the way around the needle.

I understand what the stitch instructions mean, but I don't know what slip marker means. Can anyone help?
