"If you knit a scarf in stockinette stitch, the side edges will roll toward the wrong side, and your scarf will resemble a tube. One way to counteract this tendency when you want a piece of stockinette to lie flat is to work the 3 or 4 stitches on the edge in garter stitch. These are called selvedge stitches."
Hope that helps! (Although you might have to rip out what you've done and start all over again.)
