I am just learning, too. I think you may be making the same mistake I was....I was putting the needle into the stitch at the wrong angle. Between watching the video on this site and rechecking my knitting "how to" book, I finally figured it out. Make sure you are putting the needle into the front of the stitch, rather than the back. It is hard for me to explain, but if you have a knitting book that shows how to make the stitch, look at the picture carefully.
