stockinette stitch

When doing the stockinette stitch on the second row (first row is K1, P1), do you have to reverse it so that the stitches end up being:

KPKPKPKPKP
KPKPKPKPKP

Or do you start off knitting, so that the stitches end up being:

KPKPKPKPKP
PKPKPKPKPK
?
