With practice, this decrease is even easier to do than knitting two together! Don't slip those stitches as you describe. Either slip them both knitwise (one at a time), or slip the first one knitwise and the second one purlwise (which is what I do). Then insert the lh needle through the front of both stitches and knit them through the back loops with the rh needle. And yes, the resulting decrease will slant in the opposite direction of the knit-2-together decrease. That's why both decreases are so often used in the same row - for symmetry.
