It sounds like you are knitting on a round needle in the continuous stream around the needle. In this case, the garter stitch would be to knit and purl alternating rows. The stockinette stitch would be to knit (or to purl) every row. If you are using two needles, or even the back-and-forth method on a round needle, then you would do the opposite for these two stitches. There are many adaptations necessary for knitting on round needles, and this is one of them.


: When I see pictures of the garter stitch, it looks like knit one row, purl one row and repeat. However, the instructions for garter stitch are just to knit every row. When I knit every row, it looks like the stockinette stitch. What am I doing wrong? Am I supposed to reverse my work at the end of each row? (That is, always keep my knitting moving from left to right by switching my needles and reversing the work.) Thanks for your help!
