Picking up stitches along a knit edge of a sweater is a faily simple process. You can approach this from the knit side of the fabric or the purl side.

Picking up stitches along the row edge
A knit stitch is not a perfect square. It is short and wide. Because of this you will pick up less stitches across a row edge, than you would on a knit edge. It will be important to use your knit gauge to calculate how many stitches should be picked up along a row edge of knit.

Picking up around a neck edge
A sweaters neck has both stitches and rows to pick up to. Again here we will use your knitting gauge to calculate how many stitches will be picked up along this curve, but we also need the measurement of the neck line from the body of the person for who the sweater is for.

Mattress stitch
This is the most basic stitch used to sew a garment together. You will soon see how easy it is to sew your sweater pieces together. If your sweater is knit with a textured yarn we recommend using a smooth yarn that is of a comperable size.
